Building Confidence Through a Library Internship

Sonja — Plainfield High School · Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library
A graphic design class at Plainfield High School led Sonja to a real-world internship with the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. The experience helped her apply classroom learning while contributing to the library’s communications and community work.
One of her most impactful projects was helping create the library’s annual report. She worked with staff to shape how the library shared its story and impact with the community.
The internship also helped Sonja grow more confident. Working with colleagues, sharing ideas, and responding to feedback pushed her outside her comfort zone. The library valued her contributions enough to continue working with her as she transitioned to DePauw University, where she studies history and political science.
Sonja encourages other students to give an internship a chance: “Don’t hesitate. You should give yourself the chance to find out.”
